Pedestrian Bridge

Location

Mirvac is delivering a new pedestrian bridge over the Southern Highlands Railway Line on behalf of Transport for NSW (TfNSW). The bridge is located between the intersections of Station Street with Stevens Road to the west, Moreton Park Road to the east.

The pedestrian bridge will be free standing and sit directly adjacent to the northern side of the existing narrow road bridge where Station Street runs over the Southern Highlands Railway Line.

About

Mirvac, along with project partners Benedict Industries and the Halfpenny family, is delivering a separate 2.5-metre-wide pedestrian bridge with handrails, to safely connect existing and future residential communities situated on either side of the Southern Highlands Railway Line.

Approval of the REF from Transport for New South Wales (TfNSW) for the construction of the pedestrian bridge was received in August 2024. Full detail can be found here.

The pedestrian bridge is designed to safeguard the community from ongoing risks associated with crossing on the existing road bridge along Station Street that does not include a segregated pedestrian or cyclist path.

Safety

Currently there is no provision for pedestrians and cyclists to safely cross the rail line at the existing Station Street vehicle bridge.

The anticipated growth of the Menangle population following residential development on either side of the rail line will see a surge in pedestrian and cyclist usage of the unprotected road bridge.

Mirvac’s delivery of a separate pedestrian bridge will therefore enable a much-needed safe connection east and west of the rail corridor.

Accessibility

The inclusion of accessible ramps connecting the path networks on either side of the rail line to the pedestrian bridge facilitates equitable access for existing and future communities.

The pedestrian bridge will be compliant with the Disability Discrimination Act (1992) which will enable accessible connectivity between the residential development and public open space on the east of the rail line and the broader Menangle village and Menangle Train Station on the west of the rail line.

Connectivity

The pedestrian bridge will enhance physical and social connectivity between communities on either side of the rail line.

Eastern side residents will be offered pedestrian access to the central town of Menangle, as well as open space, public transport and other facilities situated closely on the western side of the rail line.

The pedestrian bridge provides a walking and cycle linkage which facilitates active movement and promotes healthy lifestyles throughout the community. An easily accessible pedestrian east-west link will enable community gatherings in parks and open spaces on either side of the rail line, enhancing social cohesion  amongst the Menangle neighbourhood.

Delivery of the pedestrian bridge aligns with the need to provide safe access to public transport to support Sydney’s increasing population, particularly facilitating the improvement in accessibility to and from the Menangle Train Station which is currently significantly constrained to residents on the eastern side of the rail line.
